Building a Great Market Display – 2020 Update | Craft Market Inspiration
Our original post contains some great ideas on building a great market display and is one of our most popular posts overall here on the blog (find it here if you haven’t checked it out yet). But it’s a new market season, and that means there are some fun new trends being done for market displays! Consider this a volume 2 to our original market display post, with updated ideas!
A few weeks ago, I spent a week at a creative conference, and while I left exhausted, I also left with a full heart and full of inspiration. After seeing some of the amazing marketing activations from sponsors like Native Deodorant and Booksmart (so dreamy), I’ve been brainstorming on how I can level up my game when it comes to building a great market display for 2020.
It’s been fun to look at pop up displays a little differently than I had in previous years. In the past, I would focus on essentially product display management. How do I best display everything I have in a way that people can see it all in one glance. This year, I’ve been brainstorming ways that I can combine effective retail strategies with fun marketing that also tells a story about myself and my brand. This year, I am choosing to step into my power and share more about who I am, and why I started AllyBeth, both through my pop ups and online marketing. It’s a tall order, I know. But I’ve been running this business for 6 years now, and it’s about time that I own what I’ve created and allowed people to see me. #callingmyselfout.
Anyways, I have 2 spring markets coming up in April and have been itching to try something new. Since you guys loved the first post from a few years ago, I knew you’d love to see my updated inspiration photos.
Here’s what has been inspiring me lately!
Idea #1 for Building a Great Market Display – Use Pegboard Shelving
The functionality of this pegboard wall is blowing my mind. Clear branding, fun greenery, functional hooks for clothing and a backdrop to cover her from her neighbours. I think these also break down into three sections.
Don’t these guys look fun? I mean, and they also included leather bound books in their display. I love how the pegboard on the left really rounds out the display and balances against the larger sign on the right.
On the search for pegboards of your own? There are great options on Etsy if you are looking to buy them, and Apartment Therapy has a great tutorial on how to make them yourself!
Idea #2 for Building a Great Market Display – Incorporate Walls in your Display
Having walls in your booth is a big deal in all of the larger trade shows, but sometimes, we don’t have the time (or budget) to install them for smaller pop-ups or weekend shows. That being said, I love the idea of creating smaller standalone walls – they can make such a difference when establishing your branding – and I love that they can be used together to create one big backdrop or individually on their own.
I am totally in love with Coco Daydream‘s wall feature here. Their candles literally shine against this plywood wall, their company name is clearly displayed and you can easily get a feel for the type of company they are just by looking at this display. Love it!
This salted caramel sauce booth is such a great reminder that you don’t always have to be fancy – simplicity goes a long way! I love the wall with just a few shelves here and there, and it looks like they made it to fold in half as well. So cute!
You can always cover up your wall with and on-brand design like Polli did below. Their display looks so sleek, minimal and stunning!
Idea #4 for Building a Great Market Display – Incorporate Your Brand + Define Your Space
Lately, I’ve been trying to think of my display more as an extension of my brand, not just a structure to hold my products. It’s one of the main reasons I’ve been wanting to modify my display plan – and these ideas have me really inspired.
This category was actually meant to be two separate ones, but all of the inspiration booths that incorporated their brands really well – also did a great job defining their space. I think that’s definitely not a coincidence and there’s probably a lot to be said about combining the two ideas.
I’m sure Bespoke Letterpress (below) could have done without the black border around the top of their booth – but doesn’t just add that extra dramatic flair? It really connects their large booth together, and it’s easy to tell it all belongs to the same vendor.
I love this one by Eloise Panette, because you don’t really see any displays – you see a beautiful little pop up where everything just looks like it belongs. I’m also in love with their use of florals, which brings me to my next inspiration point….
Idea #5 for Building a Great Market Display – Incorporate Florals + Greenery
Give me all the greenery. Real or faux, it doesn’t matter. This display makes we want to go out and buy something to hang curtain rods from and drape them in tree-like foliage. It might be unnecessary for her jewelry display, but really rounds out her branding display. Beautiful!
Also on my new favourites list is folks utilizing paper flowers in their backdrops. This one is also Alt’s fault, since this beautiful display was a backdrop in one of the workshop rooms at the Saguaro hotel (and that lovely lady is Joanne from Knix, giving a tear-jerker of a speech).
So now, I’ve been on a hunt for ideas on how to incorporate these into my booth display (because why not). I already own a Cricut Maker and these cut files from Etsy give you the patterns and the instructions. Yes please.
Idea #5 for Building a Great Market Display – Building a Folding Checkout Desk
Space in my car on pack-up day is always limited. I’m constantly looking for good shelving that folds down and fits easily in my car. A display like this has been on my mind for a while and I’ve even tossed around the idea of making 2 or more of them and using them for straight up displays (not just for cash).
I would likely use plywood instead of reclaimed wood like in this tutorial – and I can already see my canvas banners hanging so beautifully on the front.
That’s all I have for now – it’s time for me to get back to work and actually product some of the product I’ll be display at the pop ups next month! If you end up revamping your market display, I’d love to see pictures! Reach out to me on instagram or leave a comment below! You are awesome <3
