Year In Review – My Funny Annual Routine

Every year, for the past ten years, I’ve stolen someone’s left over one sided business card and turned it into my own quickee version of a year in review.

It’s kind of funny, really, but it started with me trying to remember what the heck happened that year and wanting to make a quick brainstorm list. I grabbed whatever was on my desk (turned out to be a Ricki’s business card), and jotted down the key events from the year. Then, I grabbed another one right away to have ready for the follow year, so I could write the events down as they happened. Those two years grew into another year, and another year, and each year I scrounged up a business card to add to the pile.

It’s just something about the size of them that makes it non-intimidating. Small enough to be picky about what you choose to include, but big enough for 10-15 things depending on how small you write. I am mostly just completely impressed that the entire stack as made it’s way through every move, every office re-organization, floods. You name it, they withstood it.

What IS a little shocking though, is how hard it’s become to find a one-sided business card anymore. Last year, I used a business card from Hunni’s that wasn’t totally blank on the backside, but had just enough white space to make due. This year, Essential Packaging’s $10 off coupon made it’s way to the pile. LOL. Regardless, it’s a trend that I’ve noticed in this very roundabout way.

And while I usually have the best of intentions of journalling more of a year in my life, it never really happens. It’s like struggling with anxiety causes me to freak out about all the things I have to be doing (or should be doing because I’m afraid I’ll forget), the angst actually prevents me from doing any of it. So before you know it, I’m at the end of the year, wishing I had written more and STILL with a to-do list a mile long. If this is you to, please for the love of all that is good, drop me a comment to let me know it. Because sometimes I really think I’m loosing my marbles!

BUT.

This year will be different.

(Bet you didn’t see that coming did you?! …..)

In making a few changes in my business this year, I’m shifting away from the methods and the courses and the ‘need-to-do’s when it comes to writing + social media, and instead shifting towards a whole lot of sharing my heart. I’m getting a bit more selfish, and am focusing a bit more on what my heart feels like sharing, and a bit less on what you could/would/want to read or see or do or buy. Basically, I’ma do me, and just maybe you’ll like reading along to. I mean, people say I know a lot of random things, so maybe you’ll learn something along the way.

It’s kind of terrible, probably risky, but still a little bit awesome.

I’m also hoping that it will help relieve a little bit of that analysis paralysis I get when it comes to hitting that post button. A little secret – this is why you never seen me post much. It all gets stuck in the ‘trying to make it look pretty’ phase. UGH. It’s a whole lotta UGH is what that is. So ok, I’m going to work on that too.
